Rosalia Lombardo: The Sleeping Beauty of Palermo

Rosalia Lombardo: The Sleeping Beauty of Palermo

Rosalia Lombardo died in 1920 in Palermo, Sicily, just days before her second birthday. She fell victim to pneumonia caused by the Spanish flu. Devastated, her father, Mario Lombardo, asked renowned embalmer Alfredo Salafia to preserve her body.

Salafia used a secret chemical formula that kept Rosalia looking incredibly lifelike. Her skin, eyelashes, and even her blue eyes remained soft and natural. Because she looks like she is peacefully sleeping, she became known as the “Sleeping Beauty.”

Today, Rosalia is on display in the Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo. For many years, visitors claimed her eyes appeared to open and close. Experts later explained this was only an optical illusion caused by changing light and humidity in the room, not actual movement.

To protect her, Rosalia now rests inside a sealed glass case filled with nitrogen gas. This helps slow down any further decay and keeps her in excellent condition.

Her story continues to attract thousands of visitors each year — a touching reminder of a father’s love and the remarkable skill of early 20th-century embalming.
