Wisconsin Father Charged with Child Neglect After Thanksgiving Fire Kills His Three Children

KENOSHA, Wis. — A 39-year-old father is facing three felony counts of child neglect resulting in death after a devastating apartment fire on Thanksgiving night 2025 claimed the lives of his three young children.

Joshua Kannin was charged Tuesday following the blaze that killed 10-year-old Rylee Kannin, 9-year-old Connor Kannin, and 7-year-old Alena Kannin at his home on the 5200 block of 43rd Avenue.

According to the criminal complaint, Kannin told investigators he woke up to a small fire in the kitchen but panicked and ran to a neighbor for help instead of first trying to rescue his children. By the time firefighters arrived, the apartment was fully engulfed in flames.

Kannin later claimed he attempted to re-enter the burning home after hearing his children’s cries but was forced to turn back due to thick, overwhelming smoke. He was hospitalized for smoke inhalation.

Investigators determined the fire started accidentally when the children, who were likely trying to make food late at night, left a stove burner on. Items on or near the stove caught fire and spread rapidly.

Compounding the tragedy, Kannin admitted to police that he had removed or unplugged the smoke detectors in the apartment beforehand because they were “annoying” — an act prosecutors say contributed to the deadly outcome by delaying any warning.

Two of the children, Rylee and Connor, were pronounced dead at the scene. Alena was airlifted to a Milwaukee hospital with severe burns but succumbed to her injuries later.

The children’s mother, Jourdan Feasby, confronted Kannin at the hospital in the aftermath, reportedly asking him, “You couldn’t grab the kids first?” Months later, she described her grief as “hell here on Earth,” calling her children inseparable—“the three little amigos.”

Authorities have emphasized there is no evidence Kannin intentionally started the fire. However, they argue his decisions—failing to ensure working smoke alarms and prioritizing his own escape—amounted to criminal neglect.

Kannin is not currently in custody and is scheduled to make his initial court appearance in mid-May. If convicted on all counts, he could face up to 75 years in prison.

The case has left a community mourning three young lives lost in a preventable tragedy and a mother still searching for closure.
