SHERIFF RUNS OVER COP K*LLER WITH ARMORED TRUCK AND SAYS HE DESERVED IT


 


A 35-year-old detective and veteran U.S. Navy corpsman was killed in Porterville, California, on Thursday, April 9, 2026, during an "eviction ambush" that resulted in a hours-long standoff, ending when SWAT teams used an armored vehicle to run over the suspect.


The Incident

  • The Suspect: The gunman was identified as 60-year-old David Eric Morales, who had failed to pay rent for 35 days and was expecting the final eviction notice.
  • The Ambush: Tulare County deputies arrived to serve the eviction notice when Morales opened fire with a high-powered rifle, having "laid in wait" for them.
  • The Victim: Detective Randy Hoppert, a six-year veteran of the Tulare County Sheriff's Office, was struck during the initial gunfire and died at Sierra View Medical Center. He is survived by his wife, who is four months pregnant, and two sons.
  • The Standoff: Morales barricaded himself inside the home, firing at law enforcement and even shooting down a police drone over several hours. Family members were in contact with him, but he refused to surrender, stating he "ain't going down peacefully"

Armored Vehicle Confrontation 

  • The End: Around 6 p.m., Morales left the home through a window, wearing camouflage, and continued firing at law enforcement from residential yards.
  • The Action: A Kern County SWAT team in a BearCat armored vehicle located Morales. Sheriff Mike Boudreaux confirmed the team drove over Morales to neutralize the threat.
  • Officials' Defense: Sheriff Boudreaux vocally defended the move at a news conference, stating, "We intentionally ran him over... Don't shoot at cops. You shoot at cops, we're going to run you over


The incident caused significant emotional distress within the department, as Hoppert was well-regarded and a father of a young family. Governor Gavin Newsom ordered flags at the State Capitol to be flown at half-staff in honor of Det. Hoppert.
